Latest on Trapped Chilean Miners

Steve Harrigan just provided an update on the 33 men trapped in a mine in Chile. NASA is providing guidance at the request of Chile’s government. While they have experience dealing with astronauts in isolation, this situation is unprecedented.

The government has formulated three different plans for freeing the miners, each using a different drill. In the best case scenario, they could reach the miners in two months.

As they begin their second month underground, conditions have improved for the men. They are now receiving some hot food, and are getting letters through a tube. Two miners have proposed to their girlfriends while trapped.
