Insider Exclusive: Getting to Know Lou Dobbs

The Fox News Insider sat down with Fox Business Network's Lou Dobbs and asked him everything we thought you’d want to know about him — from his first job in the business to the best advice he's ever received. Lou Dobbs gets down to business with the Insider:

How did you get into the TV news business?

I went to work for a 500-watt radio station as a police and fire reporter for KBLU-AM in Yuma, Arizona. I started each day at about 3 a.m. and I was making about $75 a week, having the time of my life. I knew I had found what I loved and what I’d love for the rest of my life.

It was a few years ago, but that’s how it all began.

What is the best advice you have ever received?

I’m one of those people who has gotten lucky and gotten a lot of great advice. I think the advice my father gave me, a long time ago, in junior high school as we called it then ... He said to me, “Say exactly what you mean, and mean what you say.” Now, some people would accuse me of overdoing it, but I found it to be very helpful throughout my life.

What excites you about working at Fox Business Network?

Working at Fox Business Network is giving me a chance to work with such a great group of people and with such terrific leadership. This is a dream come true for me and I’m so ready to get underway. I’m just delighted to be here.

Has something totally unexpected ever happened on-air?

Lots of unexpected things have happened and I think some of the silliest things happened when I was a young TV reporter, like a local newsperson nailing the weatherboard shut and the weatherman not being able to pull it open and all of us just discovering it while we were on the air. A lot of those sort of things have happened.

Name one thing that surprises you about fans.

I think the thing that most surprises me about fans over the years, and it has been made true throughout my career, is their knowledge and warmth. My fans throughout have been terrific, positive people and I have enjoyed every moment of interaction with them.

Starting March 14th, tune in to Lou Dobbs Tonight weeknights only on the Fox Business Network. To find it in your area, click here.
