It served as a symbol of comfort to both survivors and first responders following the terror attacks that occurred at the World Trade Center towers on September 11, 2001. But now, an atheist group has deemed a cross formed out of two beams from the rubble offensive and are suing to have it removed from the Ground Zero Memorial Museum.
Joe Daniels, president of the 9/11 Memorial, told the folks at Fox and Friends that he thinks the suit is “ridiculous.”
“Fundamentally, this cross came from the rubble at a time in this country that was one of the most hellish times on Earth. It’s a part of the history, and it should be in the museum,” he said.
Dave Silverman, president of American Atheists, disagreed, recently issuing this statement:
“The World Trade Center cross has become a christian icon. It has been blessed by so-called holy men and presented as a reminder that their God, who couldn’t be bothered to stop the Muslim terrorists or prevent 3,000 people from being killed in his name, cared only enough to bestow upon us some rubble that resembles a cross.”
Daniels said this sentiment should be offensive not only to Christians, but to people of all faiths who found solace in the symbol after the events of that fateful day.
“The people who died on that day were of all faiths. The people who helped in the recovery efforts were of all faiths. This cross provided comfort to them, regardless of their religion.”
What do you think? Should the cross be removed? Let us know.
