Kelly's Court: Should Mom in Court for Hot Sauce, Cold Shower Discipline Be Convicted of Child Abuse?
Kelly's Court takes a look at a mother accused of child abuse after her method of disciplining her child was called into question on an episode of "Dr. Phil".
Jessica Beagley was shown washing her adopted son's mouth out with hot sauce and forcing him into a cold shower as behavioral discipline; Beagley pleaded with the television show host to help her control the boy's behavior problems. Beagley was later arrested by police, charged with child abuse and could face jail time. But, do her actions fit the legal definition of "abuse"?
Fox News Legal Analyst Mercedes Colwin said while the video may be upsetting to some, and while the mother's accelerating punishment toward her child, she continues to have a dialogue with the child about the reason behind the punishment. Former prosecutor Arthur Aidala disagreed, however, saying the technique of washing a child's mouth out with soap is much less harsh than using hot sauce, and could result in a guilty verdict.
