Video: George W. Bush Invokes Words of Abraham Lincoln at Ground Zero Ceremony Commemorating 9/11
At this morning's ceremony commemorating the 10th anniversary of September 11, President George W. Bush read the words of former President Abraham Lincoln, who he said "understood the cost of sacrifice, and reached out to console those in sorrow as best he could."
Bush read a letter that Lincoln wrote to a mother who'd lost five sons in the Civil War.
The letter read in part, "I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom."
