Britain Orders Immediate Closure of Iranian Embassy in London
As just shared on America's Newsroom, NewsCore wire service reported Wednesday morning that Britain's foreign secretary William Hague has said the UK is ordering the immediate closure of the Iranian embassy in London and that Britain is closing down its own embassy in Tehran.
"We require the immediate closure of the Iranian embassy in London and for staff to leave the country," Hague told British lawmakers in a statement to parliament.
Hague added that Iranian diplomats "must leave the United Kingdom within the next 48 hours."
The closure follows
the storming of the British Embassy in Tehran on Tuesday by hardline student protesters. All UK staff have now left Iranian soil, Hague confirmed.
Hague said Britain's move to close the Iranian embassy did not amount to the complete severing of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
He said despite Tuesday's attack, continued diplomatic communications between UK and Iran remained "desirable," but warned that the attack on Britain's embassy would not be tolerated.
"Such a flagrant breach of international responsibilities will not be tolerated," he said.
