Fred Thompson Reveals Whether John McCain Asked Him to Stay in 2008 South Carolina Primary, as Mike Huckabee Claimed
Yesterday on Fox and Friends, Governor Huckabee said that in the 2008 South Carolina Primary, John McCain encouraged Fred Thompson to stay in the race in order to split the conservative vote between Huckabee and Thompson, a claim McCain later denied on America Live.
Former Republican Presidential Candidate Fred Thompson joined Fox and Friends this morning to clarify, saying, “What Mike said is fine except for one thing, there’s not one shred of truth to it.”
He went onto say, “Senator McCain and I never had a conversation about staying in the race, staying out of the race. I think he called me the day after Iowa. I had beat him by like 15 votes or something Iowa and he called and told me he was going to demand a recount or something. We had a good laugh, and I didn’t talk to him again until after South Carolina was over with.”
