Iran Claims Obama Sent Secret Letter Requesting Direct Talks
Iran is claiming President Obama sent a secret letter requesting direct talks with Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. During a briefing earlier today Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta responded to questions about the report saying, “As far as communications, we have channels in which we deal with the Iranians. We continue to use those channels, nothing else.”
Former Israeli Ambassador to the U.N. and Fox News contributor, Dan Gillerman, compared the situation of a boxing match
saying, “the Iranians would be by now winning on points, if not heading for a knockout because at the end of the day they are throwing punches and the United States is writing letters.”
He criticized President Obama for not taking the necessary steps to stop Iran from building nuclear weapons. He said, “Talking with the Iranians is playing into their hands. The Iranians are masters at fooling the world … we will have nothing but additional time wasted and more time for the Iranians to develop that deadly program which will pose a threat to the whole international community.”
Gillerman also said the U.S. needs to use sanctions and exhaust every avenue to make sure Iran does not acquire a nuclear weapon. He asserted, “I do not think that the Iranians today feel that there is a strong president and a strong America that they have to take into account.”
