WATCH: Rep. Gabby Giffords to Finish "Meet and Greet" Event Begun on Day of Shooting
One year after the shooting that stole lives and critically injured Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, the congresswoman heads today to one of the last events she'll attend as a member of Congress. Giffords will finish the meet-and-greet event that was tragically cut short by the deadly shooting.
In a touching video released yesterday, Rep. Giffords announced that she will step down from public office this week, telling constituents, "I will never forget the trust you placed in me to be your voice. Thank your prayers and for giving me time to recover."
Tuesday, the congresswoman will
attend the State of the Union address in the House chamber on Capitol Hill. The last time she appeared in the chamber, she received a standing ovation from her colleagues as she made a surprise appearance in order to cast her vote on the debt ceiling increase.
Following the resignation, Gov. Jan Brewer (R) will call for a special primary election in April in order to find a replacement for the remainder of Giffords's term.
