Susan Powell's Family Reacts to Husband's Double Murder-Suicide

Washington state police are calling the fire that started Sunday afternoon by Josh Powell “something evil.” Investigators say Powell intentionally blew up his home, killing himself and his two young boys, 5-year-old Braden and 7-year-old Charles.

Their mother and his wife, Susan Powell, vanished two years ago when the family was living in Utah, making Josh the only suspect in the case though no charges were ever filed. Dan Springer reported from Graham, Washington on the timeline of events leading up to the fire.

Sunday around noon, a case worker dropped the two boys off, but before she could enter the home, Powell locked her outside.

She smelled gas and immediately called her supervisor right before the house exploded killing all three inside.

Thirty minutes before the explosion, Powell had emailed his attorney saying, “I’m sorry, goodbye.” The attorney didn’t read the email in time. He lost custody of the children to Susan’s parents in September, after his father was arrested on child pornography charges. Last week a judge ruled that in order for Powell to regain custody of his boys, he would have to pass a psycho-sexual evaluation and a polygraph test.

Susan Powell’s brother-in-law, Kirk Graves, spoke out after yesterday’s tragedy saying he thinks Powell was afraid of taking the polygraph. He also said, “I think he saw an opportunity to hurt a whole lot of people at the time that he ended it for himself, so he took the boys with him.”

Springer told Martha MacCallum today that this does not end the missing person’s case for Susan Powell. He said Utah police are on their way to Washington to see if they can find out anything more, but there are fears that the truth may have died with Josh Powell.

Later on America’s Newsroom, Kiirsi Hellewell, a friend of Susan Powell’s reacted to the news. She revealed that she has believed that Josh Powell killed Susan for quite a while now, and hypothesized that it may have been because he felt as though he was losing control and that Susan was gaining too much independence. Hellewell said, “She told me in the past that when they would have arguments, and fights about things and talk about divorce, he would say things like ‘You’re not getting the kids unless it is over my dead body.’” Read more.

In a later report, Fox News' Megyn Kelly mentioned that the children began to talk more about the night their mother disappeared. As reported by the Associated Press, Steve Downing, the attorney for Susan Powell's parents said, "The oldest boy talked about that they went camping and that Mommy was in the trunk. Mom and Dad got out of the car and Mom disappeared."
