BUENOS AIRES — At least 40 people died and over 550 were injured when a train crashed into a busy railway station platform in Buenos Aires on Wednesday, La Nacion newspaper reported, citing a senior city official.
The official, Alberto Crescenti, said the number of fatalities could rise as more passengers were still trapped inside the first and second carriages of the badly-damaged train.
The accident happened during rush hour when the train sped into the Once station and struck the end of the platform.
An unnamed injured passenger was quoted as telling Radio Mitre, “The train seemed to lose its brakes and crashed.”
Crescenti said earlier that around 15 ambulances were sent to the site of the crash.
The train driver was one of many people carried away from the wreckage on stretchers and taken to the hospital for treatment. Those with minor injuries left the train by foot.
The rescue operation was likely to continue into the middle of the day.
Eight people were killed last November when their school bus collided with a train in central Argentina, and another collision between a train and a bus in Buenos Aires last September killed 11 people and wounded another 212.
