Author and Military Spouse Mary Corbett on How Budget Cuts Will Affect the National Guard
How will budget cuts affect the reserves? Mary Corbett, author of the book National Guard 101: A Handbook for Spouses, spoke to Gretchen Carlson this morning.
Corbett's husband is currently deployed in Afghanistan, and she says when they were married in 2000, she didn’t know anything about the military or the National Guard. She said, “I really didn’t consider myself a military wife,
but on 9/11 I knew I was a military wife.”
Corbett described cuts to military spending outlined in the 2013 budget, saying, “We have $500 billion worth of cuts to the military coming down in the next 10 years, and nothing will be untouched.” Corbett said the members of the Guard serve as first responders in homeland security situations and provide a cost-effective service to America. She said it’s important for people to stay on top of their representatives about legislation affecting the military.
