What You Should Know About the New CDC Autism Report
According to new reports, one in 88 children in the United States has autism or a related disorder. Today on Sunday Housecall, Dr. Marc Siegel said that there is a huge controversy at the center of this news.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the U.S. doubled its number of cases of autism in the past five years, but there’s another side to this according to Dr. Siegel. He explained, “There’s also some recent studies that look like we’re over diagnosing autism. It looks like about 50 percent of cases might not really have it.”
Dr. David Samadi weighed in saying that it’s a good thing that the CDC is bringing autism to the forefront. He warned that people should not pay too much attention to the numbers
because the survey was taken in only 14 states and that they broadened the definition of autism.
Both doctors agreed that there needs to be more money and research for autism and that it’s important to catch autism early in children so it can be treated.
