Oregon Pastor Reportedly Sues Family for $500,000 After They Wrote Bad Reviews Online
An Oregon pastor is reportedly suing a family for $500,000 after they posted some bad reviews about his church online. Julie Ann Smith says that she and her daughter were shunned by their local community after leaving the church a few years ago, so she decided to post her concerns on the Internet. Smith said, “All that we did was ask questions. We just raised concerns. There’s no sin in that.”
Tom Kenniff and Arthur Aidala weighed in on the case on America’s Newsroom.
Aidala claims it would have been one thing had Smith simply been voicing her concerns, but she took it to another level by calling the church “cult-like.”
Tom Kenniff said, “To establish defamation, it’s quite a high standard. You have to say that the words subjected someone to hatred, contempt or ridicule under Oregon law. All she’s doing is expressing opinion, and I think it’s a reasonable opinion.”
