Is Our National Security Under Attack?
Could the threat be closer than you think? Donald Rumsfeld breaks down Washington, D.C.’s plan to cut America’s defense budget tonight on Hannity at 9p/ 12a ET.
By Tom Barkley, Dow Jones Newswires:
Mitt Romney warned Monday against cutbacks in defense spending, saying a strong American military is the best deterrent in an unsafe world.
Romney, seeking to project an image of strength on national security, used his Memorial Day message to pledge to "preserve America as the strongest military in the world."
"We choose that course in America not so that we just win wars, but so that we can prevent wars. Because a strong America is the best deterrent to war
there ever has been invented," the presumptive Republican nominee for the presidency told veterans outside the Veterans Museum and Memorial Center in San Diego.
While not mentioning President Barack Obama, he indirectly criticized the administration's proposal to reduce defense spending.
The other course would be to follow Europe's path "to shrink our military smaller and smaller to pay for our social needs," said Romney, who appeared at the event with Sen. John McCain, (R., Ariz.).
McCain, the Republican party's last presidential candidate, said he believes Romney is "fully qualified to be commander in chief."
"He believes in American exceptionalism. He believes the 21st century will also be an American century," said McCain, who campaigned against Romney in 2008 but recently endorsed him.
Romney said the world "is not safe," running through a list of threats ranging from the risk of a nuclear Iran to military buildups in Russia and China.
