Government Gone Too Far?: Mayor Bloomberg Plans to Ban Large Sugary Drinks From New York City

He’s already banned smoking in bars, public parks, and beaches, and forced fast food chains to post calorie counts on their menus. Now, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is targeting soda in his crusade against obesity. A proposed ban would prevent restaurants, movie theaters and street vendors from selling sugary beverages larger than 16 fluid ounces. It wouldn’t extend to diet sodas, juices or those sold in convenience stores.

Tucker Carlson outlined his argument against this ban on America’s Newsroom, saying that at the crux this is really about what the government can tell you to do. “If the government of New York can tell you how much soda you can drink, it’s a pretty short trip from there to getting you to raise your hand before you go to the bathroom,” Carlson said.

He went onto say that this is really class warfare, and charged that “this is an out-of-touch rich guy with a Napoleon complex who is offended by the idea that the proles are drinking sugary soda.”
