'The Five' Remembers D-Day and Pays Tribute to President Reagan Eight Years After His Passing
Today, The Five took a moment to look back on D-Day which took place 68 years ago today, while also paying tribute to President Ronald Reagan who passed away eight years ago yesterday. They played a clip of his famous speech delivered from Normandy, France in 1984 in which he honored the troops on the 40th anniversary of D-Day. Reagan said in part, “These are the men who took the cliffs. These are the champions who helped free a continent. And these are the heroes who helped end a war.”
While covering Reagan for The Washington Post, Juan Williams remembered the president being “one of the more personable, down to earth guys.” He said, “I was the low man on the totem pole in terms of The Washington Post White House team; Ronald Reagan would make time. He would
make sure that I wasn’t getting screwed … I’m telling you, he was a pretty special guy.”
Greg Gutfeld commented that, “D-Day reminds you that we have it easy, because they had it hard. The irony is that there’s kind of a gloomy change in our culture due to heroism. These guys gave us the freedom for measurable leisure pursuits that allow us to worship obnoxious pop stars rather than remember our heroes.”
