Racial Rhetoric Heats Up as Congress Prepares for Holder Contempt Vote
Civil rights leaders held a press conference in support of Eric Holder and accused Republicans of being politically motivated ahead of Thursday’s contempt of Congress vote against the attorney general. Leaders claimed that the House of Representatives is on a “witch hunt” and is demonstrating subtle racism, while Reverend Al Sharpton wrote in an op-ed article that Holder has been “in essence 'stopped & frisked.'"
As the rhetoric in the gun-running operation ‘Fast and Furious’ investigation heats up, Sirius XM radio host David Webb said on America Live today, “This is the preemptive narrative change ahead of Thursday’s contempt vote … because it doesn’t seem like Holder’s going to comply with the subpoena and also the pending SCOTUS decision on Obamacare. They need a distraction.”
He continued, “I’m sick of the black race hustler mafia, which is what this is, drumming up something. On the day that Holder was on the Hill, one of the days he was there testifying that nobody in DOJ at that high level knew about Fast and Furious, Lanny Breuer was in Mexico -- his chief deputy -- advocating for Fast and Furious.”
Webb said that it’s not a light matter that Holder could be held in contempt of Congress nor is the death of US Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry. He criticized Democrats, saying, “And they’re trying to change a narrative instead of the process.”
Alan Colmes told Megyn Kelly that he agrees with Democrats that this is a political witch hunt, but he’s not going to play the race card. Kelly asked Colmes if he believes Republicans would be going after the attorney general if he were white. He answered, “Yes, I think they’re doing it because it’s a Democratic attorney general.” Webb interjected, “So why play it as a black race card issue?”
Rev. Sharpton wrote in his op-ed piece, “Tattered and publicly humiliated, AG Holder has been mishandled just like the young Black and Latino men (and women) who are demonized on our streets every day.”
Colmes said he thinks these are two separate issues. “I do believe that many of the policies like stop and frisk, like voter ID are racially based. They’re hurting people of race.”
The discussion became heated when Megyn Kelly asked Colmes if the effort to go after Holder has actually distracted him from voter suppression issues, any more than it’s distracting him from gun issues. Colmes proclaimed that he’s not the spokesperson for the Democrats, to which Kelly vociferated, “I’m asking you to analyze politics which is what you do for the channel.”
Colmes reiterated his previous stance that “It’s a mistake to go after him for race, and I don’t think it’s about race. As I’ve said, I think there are enough other things Republicans are doing which are race-based for which they ought to be ashamed of themselves.”
