Weather Update: Record High Temperatures Throughout Central US
While Debby remains the big story across Florida, an extreme heat wave has taken control of the center of the nation. High temperatures will be in the triple digits from Texas and Louisiana to North Dakota. Denver, CO will see its fifth day in a row of temperatures in the 100s. Colorado tied an all-time state record high temperature in Las Animas, reaching 114 degrees on Saturday.
These hot conditions, coupled with dry weather and low humidity, are keeping an elevated fire danger in place across the West. The massive 81,000 acre High Park Fire fifteen miles northwest of Fort Collins is the second largest and most destructive fire in Colorado’s history. Red flag warnings are in effect from Montana to Colorado and Nebraska, meaning that there is an elevated fire danger.
This heat wave is due to a large ridge of high pressure that has built in across the center of the country, pulling warm air northward from the South.
The area of high pressure will move east over the next few days. Chicago, IL could see triple digit high temperatures by Thursday, the Mid-Atlantic could see them by Saturday.
