Syria: Chemical Weapons Will Be Used in Case of Foreign Attack
A spokesman for the foreign ministry is saying that Syria will use chemical and biological weapons if it comes under attack by another country, proclaiming that it will never use these type of weapons against its own people otherwise.
This is the first time Syria is acknowledging that it has weapons of mass destruction and it’s causing alarm bells to ring louder from Washington to Israel.
Dominic Di-Natale, reporting from Jerusalem, weighed in on the news from Syria, describing it as “an astonishing admission from the Syrians.”
The announcement comes as Syria faces international isolation, a tenacious rebellion that has left at least 19,000 people dead and threats by Israel of an attack to prevent such weapons from falling into rebel hands.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi said, “These weapons are meant to be used only and strictly in event of external aggression against the Syrian Arab Republic.”
Di-Natale said that there’s no doubt that Syria is feeling the pressure here because any intervention militarily with Israel would mean the very end of the regime.
