Florida Homeowner Arrested for Shooting Burglars
A Florida man was trying to protect his property when two men allegedly tried to break into his shed in the middle of the night. He’s now facing charges for shooting a gun at them.
The homeowner, Thomas Witbeck, says that he’s had break-ins on his Volusia County, Florida property before and he’s had enough at this point. He shot one of the men in the leg and then fired at their getaway van.
Witbeck reported, “There were two guys. One guy was on the other side of the van … It was dark, it was late. It was just a bad situation.”
Florida law says that you can shoot if you feel like you’re in imminent danger. The attorney general says that when the men started to run, Witbeck was not in danger anymore. If he’s found guilty, he could face up to 15 years behind bars.
