Mark Kelly, Gabrielle Giffords’ Husband, Issues Statement on Possibility of Loughner Plea Deal
Jared Loughner, the man accused of killing 6 and injuring many more, including former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, is appearing before a judge this afternoon. The judge is set to determine whether Loughner is competent to stand trial. If approved, Loughner is expected to plead guilty in an agreement with prosecutors that would take the death penalty off the table. Mark Kelly, Gabby Giffords’ husband, released the following statement:
“We don’t speak for all of the victims or their families, but Gabby and I are satisfied with this plea agreement. The pain and loss caused by the events of January 8, 2011 are incalculable. Avoiding a trial will allow us – and we hope the whole Southern Arizona community – to continue with our recovery and move forward with our lives.”
