Talking Points Memo: Playing Dirty in the Presidential Campaign
During the 2008 campaign season, candidate Barack Obama promised to bring a new tone to Washington, D.C. Tonight in his Talking Points Memo, Bill O’Reilly said that the president's promise is gone as he tries to hide the Fast and Furious scandal and is using “political assassins” to put out campaign ads. Most notably is a new ad put out by a pro-Obama Super PAC that ties Mitt Romney’s role at Bain Capital to a woman’s death.
The woman’s husband who appears in the ad lost his job at a steel plant in 2001 and subsequently his health care. At the same time, the wife was working elsewhere and had her own health insurance. Five years later, she fell ill and died from cancer.

O’Reilly summed up, “What that ad implies [is] that Mitt Romney’s cold, calculating, capitalism
caused that man’s wife to die. Does anybody think that’s a fair ad? Please, raise your hand.”
He observed, “Clearly Bain Capital and Romney had nothing to do with it. The Obama people know that but put the ad out anyway. So the logical question becomes, what does this say about the president?”

When the press asked White House Press Secretary Jay Carney about the attack ad, he responded, “I have not seen the ad and I would refer you to the campaign or to the organization.”
A member of the press said to Carney, “But you just took a very vocal position on an ad from a conservative.” He answered, “Well an ad that falsely and dishonestly represents the president’s current policy. I haven’t seen this, I can’t respond to it.”
O’Reilly called out the press secretary, saying, “Now the truth is Carney knew about the ad, everybody knew about the ad. He didn’t watch it on purpose so he could do that rouse.” He continued, “This signals a free fire zone on the part of the Obama reelection campaign that it will do pretty much anything -- including accusing Governor Romney of contributing to an American’s death -- they’ll do that to gain votes. There’s something very troubling about that, is there not?”
