Dr. Marty Makary: Diabetes From Obesity Is the Health Crisis of This Generation
There are some new calls for wider testing to prevent diabetes. Medical experts are warning about the importance of detecting symptoms before the full-blown disease hits. According to the National Institute of Health, one in three adults have something called “pre-diabetes.” Breaking that number down means that 70 million Americans, age 20 and older, are affected.
Dr. Marty Makary weighed in on what this means for Americans earlier on today’s Happening Now, saying, “It means you’re probably going to turn into someone who has diabetes in the short-term. People don’t think of diabetes as a disease that is increasing rapidly, but if smoking was the great public health crisis of the last generation, diabetes from obesity is the crisis of this generation.”
Makary said that people don’t have to be obese to be prone to Type 2 diabetes, and pointed out that some don’t even have symptoms at all. He stressed that it is a curable disease and explained that diet and exercise help in preventing it.
