WATCH: NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly, Mayor Michael Bloomberg Hold Conference on Shooting Near Empire State Building
Moments ago, New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and Mayor Michael Bloomberg described what police have uncovered following Friday morning's shooting near the Empire State Building. Two people were killed, including the suspected gunman, with eight more injured.
A male gunman, identified as 53-year-old Jeffrey Johnson, opened fire on a former co-worker at an office near the Empire State Building, killing the person.
Kelly said a construction worker alerted
two police officers who were on patrol nearby. The officers approached Johnson and he fired on them with a .45 caliber handgun. Johnson was killed in the ensuing gun battle.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said some of the eight additional victims may have been struck by police bullets. Aside from the gunman, the victims included seven men and two women.
Johnson had worked at Hazan Imports as a designer of women's accessories. He was laid off about a year ago, according to Kelly.
