J.R. Martinez Shares His Inspiring Story to Help Others Trying to Recover From Sandy Damage
As millions of people deal with the damage that superstorm Sandy left in its wake, many are wondering how do they recover? One man is helping others cope and move forward by sharing his story of strength and survival.
J.R. Martinez suffered burns on more than 30 percent of his body after his Humvee hit a roadside bomb in Iraq in 2003. At just 19 years old, Martinez endured countless operations and became a national hero, a soap opera star, a dancing sensation on Dancing with the Stars, and now a best-selling author.
On Your World, Martinez told Neil Cavuto, “The first question that everyone’s asking themselves is, ‘Why? […] why did this happen to me, why did this happen to my neighborhood?’”
Martinez acknowledges that words aren’t always enough to comfort people, but he said, “the biggest thing that I can just share with people is just try to be patient and try to stay as positive as you possibly can. I know it’s very difficult and it’s easier -- some people say, ‘It’s easy for you to say; you’re sitting in a chair and you’re okay.’ You know what, I’ve been through something in my life and I’m just telling you stay positive as much as you can.”
