Talking Points Memo: Libya Will Not Be an Issue for President Obama in the Election Thanks to the Media

A new Fox News poll has the race for president tied at 46 percent for both Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. Fox News also asked people whether they think the Obama administration tried to mislead Americans on the attack in Libya. 44 percent said ‘yes’ while 47 percent said ‘no.’

When it comes to President Obama’s handling of Libya among likely voters, 39 percent approve and 47 percent disapprove. Bill O’Reilly said tonight in his Talking Points Memo that, “The truth is that much of the mainstream media has covered for the president over Libya and the issue has not gained big time traction.

Fox News correspondent Catherine Herridge reported that she reviewed a classified

cable sent by the U.S. Mission in Benghazi to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s office on August 16th. The cable stated that the Americans in Benghazi, Libya did not believe the U.S. consulate could be defended against a coordinated attack.

On September 11th, 2012 there were coordinated terrorist attacks that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. O’Reilly concluded, “It is clear the Obama administration was warned and did nothing.”

Furthermore, O’Reilly said, “The press has not embraced [the Libya story] and the president has simply ignored it, saying over and over again his administration is investigating.”

He concluded that Libya will not be a major issue in the election and the president will be able to ride it out until after the election, “and he can thank his friends in the media for that.”
