Rev. Jesse Jackson on Voter Intimidation: ‘If You’re Not Doing Something Illegal, There’s Not Much You Can Do About It'
Civil rights pioneer and former presidential candidate Reverend Jesse Jackson joined Jon Scott on America's Election HQ. He was asked specifically about the issue of voter fraud and intimidation.
When asked about the appearance of a member of the New Black Panther Party in front of a Philadelphia polling location, which some see as a method of intimidation, Jackson stated
, “So long as no one is electioneering within 100 feet, and so long as there are not complaints by someone of intimidation, there’s nothing much you can do about that.”
Jackson, though, was more concerned with voter fraud, including the use of faulty voting machines and fake IDs, as well as suppression measures intended to keep students and seniors from voting. In his opinion, the presence of a New Black Panther Party member wasn’t as big of an issue. “I think we should not take any one group, one or two people, and spread national fear.”
The bottom line, according to Jackson, was that, “If you’re not doing something illegal, there’s not much you can do about it in the name of free speech.”
