Innocent or Guilty? Arizona Man Freed From Prison After Serving 37 Years on Murder Conviction
Bill Macumber, 77, was convicted of a double-murder 37 years ago in an Arizona court. But the jury still seems to be out on whether he was guilty or innocent.
Macumber was released from prison this week after the Arizona Justice Project worked for a decade to convince a judge that he was framed for the murder by his estranged wife.
The woman has denied framing Macumber,
who has always proclaimed his innocence. Authorities still maintain Macumber committed the murders, but said they could not go ahead with a new trial because evidence from the case was lost or has been destroyed.
They agreed to let him walk after he pleaded no contest to second-degree murder charges and the judge sentenced him to time served.
