What Is the Future of the Republican Party? Governors Jindal and Walker Weigh In

This past week, Mitt Romney attributed his defeat in the 2012 election to President Obama giving out gifts to minorities and young people. Governor Bobby Jindal (R-LA), the new chairman of the Republican Governors Association, reacted sharply to that statement. He said in Las Vegas on Wednesday, “We’ve got to stop being the ‘Stupid Party.’ You know what I mean by that. Certainly we’ve got to stop making stupid comments.”

Today on Fox News Sunday, Gov. Jindal held that he’s proud to have campaigned for Romney though he “absolutely rejects” the former presidential candidate’s comment. The Louisiana governor maintained that it’s important for Republicans to campaign for every single vote.

“If we want people to like us, we have to like them first.

You don’t start to like people by insulting them, by saying their votes were bought,” he continued, “We’re an aspirational party. Let the Democratic Party be the party that says demography is destiny.”

The new vice chairman of the Republican Governors Association, Gov. Scott Walker (R-WI) was also on Fox News Sunday. He said that it’s time for the Republican Party to not just talk about their message, but to go out and act on it. Gov. Walker said, “We have to show that we’re serious about reaching out and helping everyone. Not just a group here, not just a group there, but everyone in this country live their piece of the American dream.”

Both governors agreed that the Republican Party is the party of progressivity and growth of the private sector. Jindal added, “When it comes to the tax code, we as the Republican Party have to make it very clear we’re for a lower, flatter, simpler tax code. […] We’re not the party trying to protect the rich, they can protect themselves.”
