INFO: "Achieve Act" Is GOP's Alternative to "Dream Act"
Congressional Republicans are introducing their own version of the "DREAM Act," which they say would provide a more middle-ground alternative to provide legal status for hundreds of thousands of children of undocumented immigrants.
Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl is one of the politicians outspoken in support of the legislation, saying that Republicans are serious about immigration reform and that this particular area seemed like "a
logical place to begin."
The GOP wants to take on reform piecemeal, not in one sweeping piece of legislation, according to Fox News correspondent Steve Centanni. This first step is similar to a proposal Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) had been working on earlier this year. Rubio himself hasn't signed on to this particular legislation, although fellow Senator John McCain has.
Some of the initial requirements of those eligible include:
- Applicant must have been brought to the U.S. at age 14 or younger
- Applicant must be 28 years or younger to apply
- Applicant must have no criminal record
- Applicant must possess some knowledge of English language, U.S. history and U.S. government.
