Judge Napolitano Says Republicans Need to Remember George H.W. Bush's 'Read My Lips, No New Taxes' Pledge

This morning on Fox and Friends, Judge Andrew Napolitano discussed the fiscal cliff negotiations, and called on Republicans to remember what George H.W. Bush said about taxes, recalling the famous "read my lips, no new taxes" pledge.

He pointed out that when Bush violated that promise, he was voted out of office in 1992. Now, some Republicans - including Sen. John McCain and Rep. Peter King - are signaling that they are willing to break their anti-tax pledge and go along with President Obama's plan to raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans.

The judge pointed out that it doesn't matter whether the end result is higher tax rates or raising new revenue through closing loopholes and eliminating some deductions.

"It doesn't matter. Whatever takes more money from hard-working Americans and gives it to the government, that takes it from the productive part of society and gives it to the consuming part of society. That doesn't cause prosperity," he said.
