Jack Lew to Replace Tim Geithner as Treasury Secretary?
As the Capitol Hill rumor mill would have it, sources say the Obama administration is close to announcing their replacement for current Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner. Who is that replacement? Reports hint that White House Chief of Staff Jack Lew is the likely nominee. Such an announcement could, critics say, set the stage for another contentious battle for approval.
Lew has served in the Obama administration in his current post, as well as Director of the Office of Management and Budget. Fox News White House correspondent Mike Emanuel reports
that Lew's nomination is "all but a done deal," and is expected to be announced later this week.
Press Secretary Jay Carney has avoided getting ahead of the president on the topic, saying in a briefing yesterday, "I am sure that when the president nominates a successor to Sec. Geithner, he will look forward to speedy consideration by the Senate." No insight on timing was offered.
