Krauthammer: Assault Weapons Ban Won't Stop Violence Unless Government Confiscates Guns -- And That's Unconstitutional

Vice President Biden kicked off meetings to curb gun violence in the nation, but will stricter laws work? Charles Krauthammer predicted on Special Report, “I think we’re going to end up exactly where we started.”

Krauthammer believes that an assault weapons ban will be put in place and laws will be tighter. However, he says it didn’t work before and the statistics show it won’t likely work in the future. If the U.S. were to have an honest debate, he said, “The gun owners would admit that yes, of course the guns contribute to homicide. […] Japan had 11 gun homicides last year -- that’s a weekend in Chicago.”

The U.S. differs because ingrained

in our history is a culture of gun ownership, protected by the Second Amendment. “We have a system that believes the rights, the Second Amendment in other words, predate the Republic. And the point of having a government as in the Declaration is to secure the rights,” he said. “So unless you’re willing to confiscate, which would be unconstitutional […] these things are not going to have an effect.”
