Dr. Keith Ablow on the Hoax Involving Notre Dame Star Manti Te'o's Girlfriend: 'It's More Likely That He Was In On It'

The sports world is abuzz this morning after a bombshell report from Deadspin.com on Wednesday revealed that the girlfriend of Notre Dame star Manti Te'o never existed. The supposed death of "Lennay Kekua" during the season was cited by Te'o and in numerous reports as a source of inspiration to the linebacker, who led Notre Dame to the national championship game and finished second in the Heisman Trophy vote.

In a statement, Te'o claimed that he was the victim of an elaborate online hoax, but many observers are wondering whether he played a part in setting up the fake persona. Te'o claims that he carried on the relationship exclusively on the phone and online, and never actually met Kekua.

This morning, Fox and Friends talked to psychiatrist Dr. Keith Ablow about the bizarre story, and he pointed out that deception through the internet is becoming more and more common in today's society. Ablow said his best guess on the situation is that Te'o was aware that the woman never existed.

"The better explanation right now would be, he's in on it. Because to presume that you never go meet your girlfriend for years? That you fall in love... and that you never say 'hey, by the way guys before we start putting this on ESPN and all, I never met her,'" said Ablow.
