The Journal News Takes Down Names of Gun Permit Holders; NRA CEO Reacts on 'Hannity'

The Journal News has decided to remove the list of names and addresses of legal gun permit holders from its website amid much debate over its publication. President of the paper, Janet Hasson wrote in an email that while the NY SAFE law does not require the paper to remove the information, they believe that doing so “complies with its spirit.”

In a statement on The Journal News' website, Hasson says, “Today The Journal News has removed the permit data from lohud.com. Our decision to do so is not a concession to critics that no value was served by the posting of the map in the first place. On the contrary

, we’ve heard from too many grateful community members to consider our decision to post information contained in the public record to have been a mistake. Nor is our decision made because we were intimidated by those who threatened the safety of our staffers. We know our business is a controversial one, and we do not cower.

But the database has been public for 27 days and we believe those who wanted to view it have done so already. As well, with the passage of time, the data will become outdated and inaccurate.

...We will continue to pursue our request for data from Putnam County, and will closely analyze the data for Westchester and Rockland counties when it once again becomes publicly available. And we will keep a snapshot of our map -- with all its red dots -- on our website to remind the community that guns are a fact of life we should never forget.”

CEO and executive vice president of the National Rifle Association Wayne LaPierre joined Sean Hannity in an exclusive interview. He reacted to the news, saying, “It was shameful act. I mean it told the criminals whose house to break in if they want to steal a gun, whose house to break in if they were completely unprotected.”

LaPierre told Hannity that the Obama administration forgets in its campaign against him that it’s the “vast majority of the American public that deeply believes in the Second Amendment, […] that there is nothing more normal than wanting to protect yourself, protect your family, take individual responsibility.”

He responded to the NRA's controversial ad that mentions the president's children. “The fact is all these media elites attacking me, all these political people, when their kids go to school by and large they’re protected by police and they’re protected by armed security. […] I mean, since when is the idea of protection limited to a politician, a powerful, an elite, a celebrity, a Hollywood person?”
