FLASHBACK: Ambassador Susan Rice Tells Fox News Libya Attack Was Spontaneous Reaction to Anti-Islam Video

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will testify Wednesday before both the Senate and House committees investigating the September 11th attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

Tune in to Fox News Channel tomorrow for complete coverage of Clinton’s testimony, which is scheduled for 9am ET before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and 2pm ET before the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

In this flashback interview, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice told Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday days after the Benghazi attack that it was a result of a reaction to an anti-Islamic video.

At the time, a top Libyan official said that the attack on the American Consulate in Benghazi, Libya that killed four Americans including Amb. Chris Stevens was “preplanned” and revenge for the US killing of a top Al Qaeda leader. Rice disagreed, saying that it was a reaction to the protests on the US Embassy in Cairo as a consequence of the video. She added, “Obviously, we’ll wait for the results of the investigation and we don’t want to jump to conclusions before then.”

Rice stated, “We’ve had the evolution of the Arab Spring over the last many months, but what sparked the recent violence was the airing on the Internet of a very hateful, very offensive video that has offended many people around world.”

The ambassador remained steadfast that, “We are of the view that this is not an expression of hostility in the broadest sense towards the United States or US policy. It’s proximately a reaction to this video, and it’s a hateful video that had nothing to do with the United States, and which we find disgusting and reprehensible.”
