Hillary Clinton Calls Out GOP-Controlled House for Blocking Access to Funds to Enhance State Dept Security Abroad
After questioning from Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said she needs the help of Congress in order to gain access to existing funds to enhance security for State Department personnel overseas. Durbin pointed out that the GOP-controlled House refused to grant the funds to the State Department.
Clinton said "we have to both walk and chew gum at the same time," saying the country has to be smart about making investments in diplomacy and development while also dealing with fiscal issues.
But she said the funds that she has
requested for enhanced security since the Benghazi attack "should be a no-brainer," arguing she is asking for money that is already there. Clinton went on to say that scheduled sequestration cuts will be "very damaging" to State and USAID because "it throws the baby out with the bath" by cutting a lot of essential programs, including for security.
