Tennessee Lawmaker Stacey Campfield Proposes Bill That Would Tie Welfare Payments to Child’s Grades
A new plan in Tennessee aims to tie a family’s welfare payments to their child’s performance in school. If a child has low grades, his or her family receives less in welfare payments.
The bill’s sponsor Republican State Senator Stacey Campfield joined Happening Now, and said that the aim of the bill is to stop “generational poverty,” and that the only way to do it is through education.
“I’m not expecting these kids to write the Magna Carta. You know, ABCs, 123s … I think any parent can just about do that. We have classes for parents, we have after-school programs if kids are having problems […] We have just about everything you could ever ask for except parents that are engaged and involved,” he said.
