Katie Beers, Girl Held Captive Underground 20 Years Ago, Speaks Out on 5-Year-Old Hostage in Alabama
The gut-wrenching story of the five-year-old boy held captive in an underground bunker for going on four days has eery similarities to a situation that took place in New York 20 years ago. Katie Beers was 10 years old when family friend and construction worker John Esposito locked her in an underground box for 17 days.
The 5' by 7' box was dark, damp, and she was often chained inside. The FBI at the time called it a "hell hole," a real life 'Silence of the Lambs.' While in captivity, Esposito hit Beers, raped her, neglected her and more. Now, decades later, Beers has written a memoir called Buried Memories that documents the horrific event.
Today, Beers reacted to the Alabama hostage situation, saying her heart goes out to the young child.
"I was horrified when I heard," she told Alisyn Camerota. "I can't even imagine what he's going through being that young, not knowing his abductor, possibly seeing his school bus driver killed in front of him."
In her particular scenario, Beers said that what kept her going was the fact that she knew her abductor and in her heart, she believed he wouldn't kill her. The other thing that kept her hopeful? "Thinking about my future and thinking about the things I wanted to do with my life."
While Beers was able to reason with her abductor, she believes, because he was a pedophile, in the young Alabama boy's case, it appears that his captor "seems to be an abductor of opportunity."
"It looks like he was looking for a young child who was unable to fight back against him," she said.
