LATEST: Turkish Prime Minister Says Explosion at U.S. Embassy Was Suicide Bombing

We're learning more this morning about a terror attack outside the U.S. Embassy in the Turkish capital Ankara. Turkey's Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has now confirmed that a suicide bomber struck at a security checkpoint at the entrance to the facility. A Turkish guard was killed along with the attacker. AP reports at least one person was injured.

Amy Kellogg reported live at the top of the hour on America's Newsroom, saying it's still unknown which group was behind the blast. She said this attack took place in a very secure area of Ankara.

"We can confirm a terrorist blast at a check point on the perimeter of our embassy compound in Ankara, Turkey, at 1:13 p.m. local time. We are working closely with the Turkish national

police to make a full assessment of the damage and the casualties, and to begin an investigation. We will share more information as it becomes available," U.S. State Department Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said in a statement.

U.S. military sources tell Fox News that American staff at the embassy are safe.

The U.S. had recently approved the delivery of Patriot missile batteries to Turkey to deploy near the Syrian border. The bombing also comes just days after an Israeli airstrike hit a convoy inside Syria. Israel suspected the convoy was carrying advanced weapons to Hezbollah militants in Lebanon.

Martha MacCallum provided some background on terrorist groups that operate in and around Turkey, which has seen increasing tension with Syria.
