Panetta: Even If We'd Gotten Military Aircraft to Benghazi in Time, We Had No Idea Where the Ambassador Was
In a testimony on Capitol Hill today, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta told a Senate committee why in the attack on Benghazi, the Department of Defense wasn't able to dispatch armed aircraft to the area.
Panetta explained that such aircraft "weren't in the vicinity of Libya" at the time, and that because of the distance, it would have taken between nine and 12 hours to deploy them to Benghazi.
The secretary continued, saying that even if we'd gotten them over specified targets in time, it still depended on knowing exactly what targets they were supposed to hit. "And as a matter of fact," he said, "we had no idea where the ambassador was, at that point."
