Celebrating Black History Month: Harris Faulkner Sits Down With Captain Gail Harris, U.S. Navy (Ret.)

In honor of Black History Month, the Ailes Apprentice Program is sponsoring a special series celebrating exceptional Americans.

This morning on Fox and Friends, we saw Harris Faulkner's interview with retired Navy Captain Gail Harris. Yesterday, we got to see a behind-the-scenes look at the experience of meeting Capt. Harris, who was

the highest ranking woman in the U.S. Navy when she retired after 28 years of service.

She said that she first realized she wanted to be in the Navy as a young girl while watching the 1944 WWII film "Wing and a Prayer" with her father. There was one scene where actor Don Ameche gave an intelligence briefing aboard the ship.

"I didn't know that was what it was, but I turned to my father and I said, 'that's what I want to do when I grow up.' And he said, 'this is America, you can be whatever you want to be."

She later explained what drove her devotion to military service.

"I think the military is a calling. It is a calling that, as corny as it sounds, you want to protect the nation. And my attitude is, I may not agree with what you say or your political views but I will defend with my life your right to say it," said Harris.

Watch the full interview, including what Harris wants her legacy to be:

Check out last week's feature on U.S. Olympic hero Gabby Douglas. Tune in to Fox and Friends next Friday for a profile of astronaut Guion Bluford, who was the first African American in space.
