Gluten-Free Diets: Do You Need It?
How can you tell if you really need to be gluten-free? Today on Sunday Housecall, Doctors David Samadi and Marc Siegel addressed the issue.
One in 100 people have celiac disease -- an autoimmune disease that affects the small intestine. People who have gluten sensitivity do not have celiac disease and inflammation is caused directly from the gluten.
Gluten is found in wheat, barley and rye. Dr. Siegel pointed out that we've only been eating the protein for about 10,000 years. He said the seemingly growing number of cases is due to misdiagnosis and the fact that it's much harder to diagnose gluten sensitivity than celiac disease. “A lot of people had irritable bowel syndrome. They had a lot of problems with digesting so we started to look for something else.”
