Celebrating Black History Month: Harris Faulkner Profiles Astronaut Guion Bluford, the First African American in Space

In honor of Black History Month, the Ailes Apprentice Program is sponsoring a special series celebrating exceptional Americans. This morning on Fox and Friends, Harris Faulkner brought us the inspiring story of Colonel Guion Bluford, the first African American in space.

Harris gave us a behind-the-scenes look at the interview yesterday.

Guion Bluford grew up in Philadelphia in the 1940s and 50s, but he said he never felt like he was at a disadvantage because of the color of his skin.

"My parents did a very good job. We never felt like we were limited in any way whatsoever," he said.

Bluford served in Vietnam, becoming a decorated pilot, before moving on to a career as an astronaut. Harris asked what he was thinking when he learned in 1983 that he was going to become the first African American to fly on a space mission.

"I was just excited about flying, but I also recognized the importance of the role that I was going to play. My goal was to do the best job that I could," said Bluford.
