"I Get to Decide Here, Doctor, I Get to Decide!": Bill O'Reilly Takes on Dr. Marc Lamont Hill Over CNN Comments Comparing Dorner Manhunt to 'Django: Unchained'

A frequent guest on The O'Reilly Factor, Dr. Marc Lamont Hill, made comments this week on CNN in regards to the murderous rampage of ex-cop Christopher Dorner that some - including Bill O'Reilly himself - consider very controversial.

"He's been a real-life superhero to many people. Now, don't

get me wrong, what he did was awful, killing innocent people is bad. But when you read his manifesto, when you read the message that he left, he wasn't entirely crazy," Hill said on the network. "He had a plan and a mission here [...] and many people aren't rooting for him to kill innocent people. They're rooting for someone who was wronged to get a kind of revenge against the system. It's almost like watching Django: Unchained in real life. It's kind of exciting."

O'Reilly took Hill to task for the remarks, and in a heated back-and-forth on last night's show, challenged him on giving merit to the actions of a "madman" and being insensitive to the victims' families.

"Well the first thing is, you just mentioned the family members of the victims, and my heart goes out to them. And if my words in any way caused them any pain or trauma or stress, more than they're already experiencing, then I offer my deepest condolences and my apologies," he said.

"[But] what I was saying on CNN was not that I support Dorner. [...] I was asked to explain why he was getting so much online support," he told Bill, adding, "Many people are not seeing him as a mass killer ... I'm not condoning what he did, but Americans are capable of having two thoughts at the same time, we can walk and chew gum at the same time. We can say [...] there might be a real story about corruption, violence, about targeting innocent people that we can also talk about at the same time."

  • O'Reilly wasn't having it, however, and instead fired back, "Let me tell you why you're wrong."

"In any historical context when there's a heinous crime committed, you cannot take anything away from the crime by trying to explain why certain misguided people are supporting the killer," he said. "I understand what you were trying to do ... but what you didn't do ... you let things die down a little before you get into that!"

Hill lamented any insensitivity of his comments, but spoke about not regretting sparking what he hopes will be a broader conversation about police brutality. That's when things really started to heat up.

"You can't have a conversation about speculation," Bill interrupted. "You come up with the facts first, you don't speculate about something that you don't have any facts on."

Hill argued it would be "irresponsible of us to only talk about Dorner as a madman and not talk about police corruption."

When O'Reilly told Hill that such a conversation only "comes later," Hill charged, "You don't get to make that decision, Bill! ... You get to decide when we get to talk about police brutality, Bill?"
