New Call for Hollywood to Push for Release Dr. Shakil Afridi, Pakistani Doctor Who Helped CIA Find Usama Bin Laden, at Oscars

There’s a new call for Hollywood to help the doctor who assisted the CIA in tracking down Usama bin Laden. Dr. Shakil Afridi was sentenced to 33 years in a Pakistani prison for helping the United States. Now, one couple is asking the stars of 'Zero Dark Thirty' and other films to put the spotlight on freeing Afridi at Sunday night’s Oscars.

Robert and Kira Lorsch state in their ad in the Hollywood Reporter, “[...] who will stand up to help America next time if this is how we treat our friends?”

Today on Fox and Friends, Robert Lorsch said, “In a sense it’s a parody that’s a cry to get anybody who gets a moment in the limelight to walk out there and when the camera’s in front of them or when the microphone’s in front of them on the red carpet, make that plea to get America behind freeing Dr. Afridi.”

Lorsch only found out about Afridi’s plight less than 10 days ago while he was in Washington D.C. attending a congressional briefing on health care. After doing some research, he said, “I was just shocked to find out how this man who gave his life, gave up his relationship with his family, was in prison being tortured on a regular basis, is simply left behind.”

Kira Lorsch noted, “When Hollywood talks, people listen. We’re interested in what Jessica Chastain is wearing on the red carpet or what Kathryn Bigelow has to say. […] It’s just calling on a whole new larger voice to get the hard-hitting news out there to the mainstream.”
