TX Class Told to Wear Burqas, Call Terrorists "Freedom Fighters" During Islam Lesson

A world geography class in Lumberton High School is garnering a lot of attention after a photo surfaced on Facebook depicting students in the class wearing burqas. Parents who saw the photo demanded answers, and discovered that the teacher brought in the burqas and other Muslim clothing for females to wear during a lesson on Islam. She also reportedly told her class to refer to Muslim terrorists as freedom fighters.

One of the students' fathers said that one day, his daughter was studying Mexico, and then suddenly she was studying Islam, which isn't a country.

The Lumberton Independent School District issued a statement responding to the incident on Monday, saying, "The lesson that was offered focused on exposing students to world cultures, religions, customs, and belief systems … Clothing expresses the individual culture. The lesson is not teaching a specific religion, and the students volunteered to wear the clothing."

The principal of the school also said that the lesson was required by the state. This claim prompted Sen. Dan Patrick (R - Texas), chairman of the Senate Education Committee, to launch an investigation in which he uncovered that it wasn’t required by the state after all. So, the investigation was dropped.

Patrick, however, told Fox News he's still appalled. "Imagine if a Muslim student was told to dress up like a priest," he said.

The principal continues to support the lesson.
