Shepard Smith on Sequestration: "Why Is Everybody on Capitol Hill - So - Dumb?"
Just one day away from the deadline to avoid $85 billion in automatic spending cuts, Fox News anchor Shepard Smith reported on the inability of both GOP and Democratic lawmakers to get the votes needed to pass plans replacing the cuts. Well, Shep may have reacted with the feelings of the nation when he said of the back-and-forth, "that's dumb."
In an update from White House correspondent Mike Emanuel, the reporter told Smith of the day's updates (which were few, in actuality), adding that basically, "If the country freaks out because of the spending reduction, there will be pressure to do something about them." Until then, the sequestration will likely go into affect tomorrow.
Cue: Shepard Smith. "This is dumb. The Pentagon has said, just as one example, [...] the Pentagon wants to cut an enormous program. It doesn't need it. This does not allow them to cut it, but the Pentagon said, 'We don't need cuts over here where you are cutting. Could we just fix this?' The answer is 'no.' Mike, that's dumb. Why is everybody on Capitol Hill - so - dumb?"
In true journalistic form, Emanuel did his best to respond. "There are a lot of dynamics, here. [...] You are correct. There are a lot of ways they could do this a lot more surgically."
