Group of Johns Hopkins Med School Students Want Dr. Ben Carson Replaced as Commencement Speaker After Gay Marriage Comments

A group of medical school students at Johns Hopkins University is calling for renowned pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson to be replaced as commencement speaker because they don’t agree with his comments on gay marriage.

Earlier this week on ‘Hannity,’ Carson said, “My thoughts are that marriage is between a man and a woman. It’s a well-established fundamental pillar of society. And no group be they gays, be they NAMBLA, be they people who believe in bestiality … It doesn’t matter what they are, they don’t get to change the definition.”

Carson has since clarified the comments, telling a newspaper, “I certainly believe gay people should have all the rights anyone else has. I was trying to say that as far as marriage was concerned, it has traditionally been between a man and a woman and no one should be able to change that.”

Dan Gerstein, a Democratic strategist, said the lesson in this is that freedom of speech doesn’t guarantee freedom from consequences. “In the end, this really comes down to not a free speech issue, but a values issue – who does Johns Hopkins want to represent them?”

He believes that Carson touched on “classic bigoted tropes against gays and lesbians of this country.”

“Whether it was his intent or not, if nothing else it showed a horrible lack of sensitivity,” he said.

Megyn Kelly pointed out that in Supreme Court hearings this week, Justice Sotomayor asked if gay marriage would open the door to polygamy and incest being allowed.

Radio show host Ben Ferguson stressed that once you redefine marriage, and precedent is everything at the Supreme Court, “then who are we to decide that the next group of people that want to expand marriage yet again are then denied their ‘rights?’”
